Final expense insurance is a small whole life policy designed to cover the costs that come at the end of life. Funeral and burial expenses, outstanding medical bills, credit card balances, and other final debts.
Unlike term life insurance, which is often meant to replace income during working years, final expense coverage is built specifically for people who want to make sure their family is not stuck paying thousands of dollars out of pocket when they pass away. Coverage typically ranges from $5,000 to $50,000, and the premiums stay level for life.
Who is this for?
You might be a good fit if you are between 50 and 85 years old and want to make sure your funeral costs are covered. Your children are grown and you no longer need a large life insurance policy. You have been turned down for coverage before because of health issues. Or you simply want the peace of mind of knowing your family will not have to scramble to pay for everything when the time comes.
If any of that sounds familiar, this coverage was built for people in exactly your situation.
What does it actually cover?
When you pass away, your beneficiary receives a tax-free lump sum. They can use it for anything, but most families use it to cover:
- Funeral and burial or cremation costs, which can range from $7,000 to $15,000 depending on the type of service, location, and personal preferences
- Outstanding medical bills or hospital balances
- Credit card debt, personal loans, or other bills that do not disappear when you do
- Everyday expenses for a surviving spouse during a difficult transition
- A small cushion so your family is not left with nothing
The money goes directly to whoever you name as your beneficiary. It does not go through probate and it is not taxable.
Two types of final expense coverage
Simplified Issue
You answer a short set of health questions but there is no medical exam. If you qualify, coverage starts immediately and premiums are lower than the alternative. Most people qualify for simplified issue even with common health conditions like diabetes, high blood pressure, or COPD.
Guaranteed Issue
This is for people who have more serious health concerns or have been turned down for other coverage. There are no health questions and no medical exam. Anyone within the age range qualifies.
The tradeoff is that premiums are higher and most guaranteed issue policies have a two year waiting period before the full death benefit applies to natural causes. However, if you do pass within the waiting period from natural causes, most policies will pay your beneficiary all the premiums you paid into the policy plus 10% interest. Accidental death is typically covered in full from day one.
Not sure which one you would qualify for? That is one of the first things we help you figure out.
How much coverage do you need?
This depends on the costs your family would realistically face.
- $10,000 to $15,000 typically covers cremation or a very basic funeral and burial
- $15,000 to $25,000 covers a standard funeral and burial more comfortably
- $25,000 to $50,000 covers funeral and burial costs plus outstanding medical bills or debts, and can leave something behind for your family
The right number is different for everyone. We will help you figure out what makes sense for your situation so you are not paying for more than you need or leaving your family short.
What affects the cost?
- Your age at the time you apply. Younger is always less expensive.
- Your gender, since female rates tend to be slightly lower.
- Whether you use tobacco.
- Your health history and any current conditions.
- Your state of residence.
- The amount of coverage you choose.
Every situation is different. The best way to know what you would actually pay is to request a quote based on your real information. We will show you honest options, not a generic estimate.
Concerns we hear all the time
I have health problems. Will I even qualify?
Most likely, yes. We work with carriers that specialize in approving people with diabetes, high blood pressure, COPD, heart conditions, and other common issues. If simplified issue does not work, guaranteed issue is available with no health questions at all. We will find the best option for your specific situation.
I am worried about being locked into something I cannot afford.
Final expense premiums are level, meaning they do not increase over time. We help you choose a coverage amount that fits your budget so the premium is something you can comfortably maintain. If your situation changes, we will work with you to adjust.
What if I miss a payment?
Most policies include a 30-day grace period. If you miss a payment, you typically have a full month to catch up without losing coverage. We walk you through exactly how your specific policy handles this before you commit to anything.
Is this legitimate? I have heard bad things about these kinds of policies.
We understand the concern. We only work with established, A-rated carriers and we explain every detail of the policy in plain English before you move forward. If something does not make sense for your situation, we will tell you directly.
My family said they would just handle it.
The average funeral costs between $7,000 and $15,000, and that is before you factor in outstanding medical bills, debts, or other final expenses. That is a real financial burden to put on someone who is already grieving. Most families who say they will handle it do not realize how much it actually costs until they are in the middle of it.
A final expense policy means they can focus on grieving and being together, instead of the added stress of scrambling to figure out how to pay for everything.
How we help
We are not tied to one insurance company. We compare the top final expense carriers across the country and match you to the one most likely to approve you at the best rate for your health and age.
We explain everything in plain language. We handle the application with you over the phone. And if we are not the right fit, or you are better off sticking with what you already have, we will tell you that honestly.
There is no cost to get a quote and no obligation to move forward.
The people you love should not have to carry this weight.
You are on this page because you care about what happens to the people you leave behind. That already puts you ahead of most people who keep putting this off. A quote costs nothing. Our team will follow up with real options based on your situation, not a sales pitch.
