Final expense insurance is a type of whole life policy designed for one purpose: to cover the costs your family would face after you’re gone. Funeral and burial expenses, unpaid medical bills, and final debts.
Unlike term life insurance, which is meant to replace income during working years, final expense coverage is built for seniors and designed to stay in place for the rest of your life. The coverage amounts are smaller, typically $5,000 to $50,000, and the premiums are designed to stay affordable.
Who it’s for
Final expense insurance makes sense for people who:
- Are between 50 and 85 years old
- Want to spare their family the cost of a funeral
- Don’t need a large term life policy anymore because their children are grown
- Have been turned down or quoted a high rate because of health issues
- Want simple, permanent coverage without a medical exam
Two main types
Simplified Issue Final Expense Requires a short set of health questions but no medical exam. Approval is usually within days. Premiums are lower than guaranteed issue, and coverage starts immediately.
Guaranteed Issue Final Expense No health questions, no medical exam. Anyone within the age range can qualify. Premiums are higher, and most policies have a two-year waiting period before the full death benefit is paid for natural causes. Accidental death is usually covered from day one.

How much coverage do you need?
The right amount depends on the costs your family would actually face. For most people:
- $10,000 to $15,000 covers a basic funeral and burial
- $15,000 to $25,000 covers a standard funeral plus some final debts
- $25,000 to $50,000 covers a funeral, medical bills, and leaves money for the family
