Life Insurance With Hidradenitis Suppurativa

Life Insurance With Hidradenitis Suppurativa

Hidradenitis suppurativa is a skin disease rather than a life-threatening one, and an underwriter treats it that way. A mild, well-controlled case often adds little to the price of traditional life insurance. What moves an offer is how severe your HS is, what medications you take to control it, and whether any related health issues have come along with it.

If you have been putting off applying because you assumed a chronic condition means an automatic decline or a painful rate, it is worth a second look. Carriers review a short list of things, and for a mild case HS changes very little on it.

How carriers view life insurance with hidradenitis suppurativa

HS is an inflammatory skin condition that causes painful lumps, usually in areas where skin rubs together. It can range from a few mild flare-ups to severe, recurring abscesses that need surgery. Underwriters know the difference, and they ask questions to place you on that range.

The mild and moderate cases are the most common, and they tend to be the most straightforward. If your HS is controlled with topical treatments, antibiotics, or occasional minor procedures, and you have no other serious conditions, the condition often adds little to your price. The disease stays on your skin, and underwriters weigh it that way.

Severe HS is where the review gets more careful, and often not because of the skin itself. Advanced cases are treated with biologic medications, which signals a more active disease. Severe HS also travels with other conditions more often, and those companions are frequently what an underwriter is really weighing.

Three things shape the outcome more than the diagnosis alone.

First, your treatment. The medication you take is a shorthand for severity. Topicals and short antibiotic courses read as mild. A biologic like adalimumab reads as moderate to severe, and the underwriter will want to understand why it was prescribed and how you are responding. On fully underwritten coverage, a biologic prompts more questions rather than an automatic decline. Some no-exam policies exclude biologics such as Humira entirely, which is one reason a fully underwritten application can be the better route.

Second, your related conditions. HS is linked with a higher rate of obesity, type 2 diabetes, metabolic syndrome, and inflammatory bowel disease. If you carry one of these alongside HS, the underwriter prices the whole combination. This is why two people with the same skin diagnosis can land in very different places. If you also manage diabetes, our guide on life insurance with type 2 diabetes explains how that piece is weighed.

Third, your smoking status. Smoking is tied to worse HS outcomes, and underwriters already price tobacco use heavily on its own. If you smoke and have HS, quitting is one of the biggest changes you can make to your rates. Our breakdown of life insurance for smokers covers how carriers treat tobacco and how long you wait after quitting to be reclassified.

The appearance or discomfort of the condition matters less to an underwriter. They are estimating life expectancy, so a painful condition does not automatically mean an expensive one to insure.

How HS affects your rates

For mild HS with no complications, expect little to no impact. You go through normal underwriting and are priced on your overall health, same as anyone else.

For moderate HS, especially if you take ongoing medication, some carriers may apply a small rating. Others will not. This is exactly where shopping across carriers pays off, because one company may treat controlled HS as a non-event while another adds a modest charge for the same file.

For severe HS, particularly with a biologic and a related condition like diabetes, you may see a table rating. That means a set percentage added to the base price. A table rating is not a decline, and if your condition stabilizes you can ask the carrier to reconsider it later, though it does not have to agree. If a rating sounds unfamiliar, our explainer on table ratings and flat extras walks through exactly how they work.

Many HS files end in an offer, though a severe case with serious related conditions can still be declined by some carriers.

When you may not need a specialized approach

If your HS is mild and well controlled, and you are otherwise healthy, you probably do not need to overthink this or seek out a specialty carrier. You can apply for standard term life or whole life coverage the way anyone else would, and your skin condition will likely be a footnote in the file rather than the headline.

In that situation, chasing down a carrier that advertises flexibility with chronic conditions may not help you. If your file is clean, apply the same way any healthy applicant would.

The same goes if you are young and healthy with early, occasional flare-ups. Do not let the diagnosis scare you into a policy with less coverage than you need. If you are weighing whether coverage even makes sense yet, is life insurance worth it when young and healthy is a fair place to think it through.

The readers who genuinely benefit from a careful, carrier-by-carrier approach are those with severe HS, a biologic prescription, and one or more related conditions. For them, matching to the right carrier is the difference between a reasonable rating and an unnecessary one.

Getting your application ready

Bring your records with you. Know the name of your medication, when you started it, and how your condition has trended over the past year or two. If a procedure or hospital visit happened, have the date and the reason. Vague answers leave an underwriter guessing, while specifics let them price what is actually true.

Be upfront about the diagnosis. HS will show up in your medical records and often in a prescription check, so there is nothing to gain by leaving it out, and an omission found during a claim review can create real problems for your family later.

Shop more than one carrier. With HS this matters a lot. Because carriers disagree so much on controlled skin conditions, the same honest file can draw very different offers. Working through an independent match means your application goes toward the companies most comfortable with your specific picture, rather than landing on a desk that happens to price HS harshly.
